J reg Astra cutting out

This is getting progressively worse:

My partners J reg Astra injection is fine most of the time, in fact
every time I drive it....always the story when tying to find a fault
isn't it....she says it coughs without warning, totally out of the blue
and then dies. Now my thought is either is could be being starves of air
and/or fuel. After it's died give it 2 mins and it'll start again.
Recent work includes head gasket replaced due to crack, thermostat and
cam belt also replaced.

It has been into the garage twice and they say they can't find out what
is happening unless they experience it themselves...hmmm.

Any thoughts on what could be happening?

Had a similar problem on a honda bike
turns out the fuelline to one of the carbs was blocked so the carb ran out of
fuel and the engine stopped
since it's gravity feed, after some minuted the carb filled up again and off
it would go !

Could you be building up a vacuum in the fuel tank? AFAIK, it shouldn't
happen on modern cars, but I noticed a sharp intake of air when I loosened
the filler cap on my 96 Vectra the other day (though I hadn't had any bad
running).

Depending on which engine is fitted, from the symptoms you describe, it
sounds as if the ignition module could be failing. It would be helpful if it
could be narrowed down to determine if it's a fuel or ignition fault. You
could try one of those spark tester plug caps to see if there is a spark
when it breaks down.

Rotar arm, plugs, leads and cap all replaced less than 4 months ago.
Its 1.3si and the "old" J reg, engine sounds great when running,
ticks over nicely, accelerates with the normal amount of drag you'd
expect from a car with it's age of wear and tear on the engine.

Sometimes it won't start from cold, the fault is totally random, no
pattern....
Makes me think the engine is being starved of something like air/fuel, I
don't think it's electrical
as that has all been checked by a garage.....it's going into Vauxhall for a
free fault
diagnosis next week, let you know what they find. Hope it's something not
too expensive or
self fixable.

Unless anyone can suggest something to try prior to next week?

Of course. My car starts just fine, you sqalid,
libellous fuckwit.
 
As promised here is an update:

It went through it's Vauxhall approved thorough check and they found
nothing, zip, zilch!!

They next day the car stalled and refused to start. The AA were called and
they put it on their diagnostic computer and found nothing at first then he
checked deeper and found it was an ignition fault.....

Car is in garage to have that replaced...I do hope this sorts the problem
once and for all.
 
Seems to have sorted the problem so If you get similar then you know what to
do, replace the ignition module :)
