Adjusting astras drum brakes

I have an 03 astra sxi, over the past week or so I've noticed the
amount of brake pedal travel has increased a bit. If the brakes are
pumped/used a bit the pedal feels better. This all sounds to me like
the rear shoes need adjusting. I phoned VX and they wanted 38 quid to
adjust them, is it me or does that sound a bit steep? Can I do the job
myself or will it affect the warrenty?

Are you sure it has drums? It'll easily take 30 minutes of anybody's
time.

sounds like they just want bleeding.
however, if it is under warranty then check the terms, not sure if they are
covered.
you could bleed the brakes yourself, with a friend is best.
check the fluid level first though and look for any seepage as well when the
wheel is off.

Aren't these usually self-adjusting? - I would think there's something else
amiss here.

Maybe a wheel cylinder gone? (Just had one replaced on my '02 model) - I
think you should check the brake fluid level PDQ, certainly before you drive
it again.

pump the pedal rapidly 6-8 times, and on the last pump keep the pedal
pressed hard.
does the pedal slowly sink to the floor?
if so, check the fluid level.
if low, you have a leak.
if not, the master cylinder is stuffed. replace as will not get better on
own.
