    Hi,

I have replaced the cassette radio in my Astra - I found that the best
option was to buy a VDO replacement - slots straight into the existing radio
cage without messing about with wiring and works with the remote display and
    steering wheel controls.

Other units will work - but you must buy extra 'bits' to make them work with
the car controls/display - my advice is to stick with the VDO unit. For
info. mine was the CD441X £180 from Vauxhall - has it about 6 months now -
    its rock solid.

Its the CD 441 XED, missed out the last letters - perhaps google will be
more accurate if you type this in.

    Hi all

I am new to this group having jumped ship from the vw group.

    I have just bought a 2002 (52 plate) Zafira 2.2 Comfort.

I have yet to pick it up and so have a few questions of you experts.

    1. It appears as if the engine has a cam chain not belt. Can anyone confirm
and if so when should it be changed.
    2. What are the service intervals.
    3. I would like to replace the basic radio casette with another unit
(probably a Sony). How does this affect the existing radio display and can
you get adaptors to convert the steering wheel controls to another make.
    4. Are there any common issues I should look out for whilst in the short
    warranty period.

Thanks to anybody who replies in advance.

Anyone know where you can find an online review of this unit, preferably
with pictures? I tried google but just came up with cars that had it fitted.

Personally I wouldn't spend serious money on an in car unit that
doesn't play back CD-RW or handle MP3s. Ok this may not be an issue for
Paul , but may be something consider.

Ditto. Seen as adapter cables are in the region of £15 (think that's how
much the one for my Alpine unit was), it would seem silly buying an inferior
unit just so you can pull the old one out and plug the new one straight in.
On my 52 plate Astra changing the radio means that you need to change the
time/date on the clock yourself as it no longer gets updated via RDS (couple
of times a year big deal). With the radio turned off the time, temperature
and date are displayed. With it turned on the date disappears, because this
is where the track/station used to be displayed.

Yes I do want an MP3 player.

www.caraudiodirect.co.uk seem do a range of steering control adaptors for a
variety of radios. You seem to buy a universal adaptor for a particular make
then a specific adpator for the radio. Costs about £40. Unless there are
    cheaper about?

Also need a wiring harness adaptor for about £15.

Quite expensive before the radio is even purchased but then I could get the
radio and sort out the steering controls at a later date when I am a little
    more flush!

    Thanks for all your replys.

No-one yet said about service intervals.

I had alook round that caraudiodirect site, and it seemed to work out
about 180 notes for the VDO 'drop in' unit, or much the same money for
an MP3 playing Sony unit + adaptor cable(s?).

A fair point....my wife's 1.8 Zafira seems to have had its services at
20K miles or 12 months apart, whichever is sooner.

The 2.2 is a chain cam; early ones - in Vectras at least - allegedly
have a reputation for snapping chains due to blocked lubrication jets,
in turn probably due to incorrect oil used at these extended 20K
    sevices.

There's a fair summary ( IMHO at least) over on Honest John's site :-
    http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/index.htm sorry i can't get
alink direct to the Zafira page working.
