I've a 2004 1.6 Zafira and am worried about fuel consupmtion ... at best
I get roughly 300 miles to the tank. It doesn't seem to matter if I'm
doing a long journey or the school runs I still get the same performance.

This equates to 30mpg which would be in line with the urban figures but
a long way short of the extra urban.

Has anyone any experience of this car/engine? Should I be expecting a
    lot more from the engine?

    Regards

I get about the same - these engines rev high so seem to use more fuel. If
I go on the motorway it really does drink it at 80mph ish.

Its a fairly heavy car, and probably you have lower gearing to compensate -
so I would guess that it would be thirstier than a lighter car.

Often for motorway journeys the bigger engines gibe a lower gear and an
easier life - running on a lighter throttle.

Our 1.8 will give 450+ to a tank, on mixed urban/motorway, but we dont
really thrash it. My wife (the main driver) has pointed out that the fuel
guage drops rapidly after it passes half way though.

I've a 2004 1.6 Zafira and am worried about fuel consupmtion ... at best I
I only get 24mpg around town and 28mpg on holiday type journeys in my 1.8
    petrol Zafira.

most of your fuel is probably being used when you spin the front wheels
pulling away from a junction :)
i asked my garage if they could tune the car for economy rather than
"performance" but they said this wasn't possible.

Our 2002 1.8 auto rarely does more than 32 on the motorway (75mph @
3000 rpm) and around town delivers from 23 to 30mpg dependent upon
weather. I drive with the lightest right foot I can for most of the
time but still get very poor consumption values. We have achieved a
max of 35mpg on the odd summer run :) Vauxhall's figures are pie in
the sky as far as I can tell.
