Zafira Emisions Warning Light

I have a 51 plate Zafira 1.6 comfort and the emissions light has come on, at
first it came on for a couple of days then went off for a couple of days,
now its come on and stays on. Car seems to be running ok.
Can anyone please tell me what the problem could be and how to fix it?

Same car on an 02 plate, my emissions light came on earlier this week. After
doing a bit of research as to common causes, I removed the EGR valve and
gave it a little clean (with WD-40)

Light has stayed out so far.

I'd imagine there are other things that can go wrong and give the same
symptoms, but it's easy enough to remove the EGR valve and try it. Might
save you a trip to your local VX dealer. If you need help locating the EGR
valve, give me a nudge and i'll send you a photo.
