My last few cars have all been Vauxhalls, and have never given me too much grief, despite doing 200K+ miles. However, my latest one certainly is giving me grief. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts / ideas that might give me some ideas? SATURDAY. Bought a Zafira 2.2i petrol 02 reg. 111K miles, FSH, could not see any probs with it. Drove approx 50 miles, then engine management light came on. Still drove fine. Unfortunately all the garages were closed until Monday. MONDAY. Started the car. Engine management light still on. Took it into the Vauxhall dealer, who read the fault code as faulty EGR valve, and said it needed to be replaced (£208). They also reset the engine management light. The garage I bought it from said get the Vauxhall garage to fix it and they would reimburse me, but unfortunately the Vauxhall garage did not have the part. Drove it for 50 miles then the engine management light came on again. TUESDAY AFTERNOON. Started fine. Running fine. Engine management light now OFF. My wife drove about 2 miles, then the car stalled. She said some white smoke came from the engine compartment at the time. Any thoughts as to whether this could be related to the EGR valve? Car would not start. But wife says it was still turning over fine. TUESDAY NIGHT Attempted to start the car, but it would hardly turn over. Possibly a smell like burnt cables - but not sure about this. Couldn't see any. Got some helpful people to push start it. Drove around for 5 miles with no problem. I figured that that should have recharged the battery. Went to start it again 1 hour later. Battery seemed totally flat. I can't imagine this being anything to do with the valve. Anyone any ideas? Many thanks for your help. Ken Morrow. To email me remove the letter after ken in the address, otherwise it will be automatically deleted.
