Is there any reason just the rubber itself isn't sold? I
just paid 16.99 for 1 rear and 2 front wipers. It's not
so much the price, as the waste of material. Sure, it's
a bit fiddly to get the rubber in with the two metal
reinforcements either side, but not impossible.

Halfords sell just the rubber. I've not tried it.

My father was persuaded to have just the rubber insert replaced once and was
done while he waited, can't remember where it was. When I saw the inserts
they were too wide for the retaining clips in the actual wiper frames so did
not form a proper curve when sitting next to the screen and hardly cleared
it at all. I had to open up the frame clips to allow the blade to move
    freely.

Wait till you have to buy a pair of front " single rubber " blades for a new
    shape Astra - £42 a pair !!!!!

Apart from the fact that fitting the rubber is a fiddle the metal
springs on the frame wear out and don't allow the new rubber to grip
the screen like a new one. At least the new silicon aero blades last 4
times as long, even if they are expensive.
