Hi all, I'm new to this group and pretty well new to Vauxhall too,
although I did have a few Cavaliers as company cars back in nineteen
    hundred and frozen to death.

Anyway, I'm thinking about buying a 1998 Omega CD Estate 2litre. On
the surface it looks and sounds very nice ... so what should I be
looking for before I part with my hard earned cash?

Thanks for any comments, they will be appreciated :)

    Regards

In my opinion the 2.0 is underpowered. It's a good engine but not capable
enough for such a large car - this leads to poor fuel economy. The Omega
starts to be more interesting with the 2.2 (late models only) or the 2.5 V6.

If you go for the 2.5V6, make sure you are prepared for big bills.
even a basic service is pricey - silly things like needing to remove
half the injection system to get at spark plugs (the pipes are in the
way). 2 catalysts, if you need to replace them. On the estate, decent
tyres are around £120 each minimum. 25-27 mpg average.

Actually I've decided on a 2litre estate but I've lived with big bills
    for routine servicing for a long time ... I've got a V8 Discovery ;-))

25 to the gallon ... in my dreams maybe :))

Isn't the 2.2 litre engine chain driven as opposed to belt? That would be a
big plus point for me, especially considering all the cambelt tensioner
problems on the Ecotecs. Mind you, after a certain time I think they
modified the design, and as long as it's had a cambelt done at a main dealer
since that time you *should* be ok. Regarding other things - it might be
worth doing a search on google groups for a post by Uno-Hoo (Kev) relating
to his problems with his 2 litre Omega.
