come up every now and then . The handbook dos'nt make it very clear what
problem this is ,only its something to do with the engine management ,has
anyone else had this and could it be serious?

you need to pull the codes
you can do it yourself, or take it to a mechanic with a ecu reader like
    tech2

The spanner symbol means there is an emission related problem. The codes
need to be pulled, but this cannot be done with the paper clip method. It
will require an OBD11 code reader, or similar, such as EOBD reader, or
    dedicated Vauxhall reader.

    The spanner is the engine management light, NOT the emisisons light;
which is an outline of an engine(?) - illogical IMHO. Othe rthan that,
    like what malcolm wrote.

    Different answer number 3.

Isn't the spanner light just the service indicator?

The emgine management light is the engine shaped light.

    Different answer number 4.

my 52 zafira 1600 petrol manual has a car with a vertical spanner through
    it
    which says "Engine electronics,Transmission electronics*,Immobiliser.
Control indicator lights up for a few seconds when ignition is switched
    on.
If it lights up when the engine is running: fault in engine electornics or
    transmission electronics system
If it flashes when the ignition is on: fault in the electronic immobiliser
system; the engine cannot be started"

Many moons ago when I was younger and more foolish I used to have a base
model citroen BX 1.4 with instrumentation that consisted of a speedo and a
light that only lit up to tell you your engine was (completely) stuffed!

    Vive la france!

Sorry to disagree Alan; but having re- checked the manual the spanner
light is definately the engine management light on a Zafira. The engine
shaped light ( which IS the engine management light on my Omega; is the
emissions warning on the Zafira) The Zafira indicates it needs a
service by displaying 'serv' or similar instead of the the trip mileage
    on the odometer.

Why GM decided to use the same warning light to indicate two different
faults on two different models defeats me!

See pages 32- 34 of the manual downloadable from here :-

  11. They have done it before - the snowflake on the auto transmission, and the
    snowflake on the A/C
