Hi,my 97 veccy 1.8 ls has started to get the shakes when braking at
speeds of 40 mph plus.no drifting just steering wheel vibration.
just been mot'd recently and no problems picked up during extensive
brake testing as part of the new mot test just introduced at my local
test centre .here in n.ireland we dont have the luxury of using a
    local garage.
all wheels are torqued up and no visible problems.
    Any ideas ?

  2. it will be the balance weights that they stick on the iside of the wheel, or
clamp on it its a steel one.

    Not expensive at all.

More likely to be a distorted brake disc.
Replace them as a pair and fit new pads at the same time.

    Warped brake discs.

    Replace them with new pads.

if was weights would vibrate all the time, more likely pads or disc problems
    if just under braking.

most likely discs, though should only do it when it comes into resonance,
then constantly after a certain speed, but doubt the gentleman has been that
    brave!
though i concur with your response, esp if disc, could even do it with a
drum. (warped, bented, rusted, ridges etc)
overall though, i don't think is.
it might be something more serious, if he brakes , the weight of the vehicle
    comes forward.
how about something to do with the steering rack wear or alike?

Thanks for the input everyone,i'm busy at work so the wife is gonna
drop it into my local grease monkey tomorrow,He's a pretty decent
bloke so i'll let him sort it.
Hey Mike, how do you think i discovered the problem,i rarely drive the
car as its my wifes motor but when i do i like to blow the cobwebs
off. Slowing down from 100 mph was when the problem manifested its
self, enough to give anyone the willies believe me .
Ive another problem with the key fob needing to be constantly
reprogrammed despite a new battery.i'll stick up a new post for that
    one though. Cheers all.
