Hi, I have a N plate Vectra 2.0 ecotec SRI. When i come off the gas or
coast the engine stalls. when i start up it stalls immediately. This seems
to be intermittent though, sometimes it is fine other times it plays up.
Before i go to vauxhall to get them to plug it in and diagnose i thought i
would see if any of you guys know what the problem may be. It is on 85k
miles, serviced every year at least, and the cam belt was done 2k miles ago
along with the cam/crankshaft sensors (possibly wrong name but you know what
    i mean)

    Any ideas?

Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for any help

Most likely the air idle control valve, as is a common problem. See the
following for details on how to fix yourself:

Cheers mate. Do you reakon its ok to use the car until saturday? Thats the
1st time i will have chance to get to even look at it. I do about 8 to 10
miles a day to and from work

I'm actually doing mine on Saturday as well! Make sure you buy the
    replacement gasket first though.

The risk is entirely yours - if it stalls when approaching a roundabout or
junction and you lose the steering and brakes, you will be in big trouble!

    Cheers

Thats not a problem. control of the car is fairly easy if it stalls, and my
route to work couldnt be any simpler. As long as im not going to bend the
    engine or anything :)

And i already checked if Horns of Stockport have the gasket... they have it
for £1.40 ish. Bit steep if you ask me. hehe. Guy in car shop said he has
done it on one of his cars and used silicone to seal it instead of a gasket,
but i would rather use a gasket

Would be careful with Horns in Stockport, price will be sky high before they
    have even done anything.
Can highly recommend the following garage in Reddish, they specialise in
Vauxhalls, have all the diagnostics gear, very helpful & a lot, lot cheaper
than Horns. Nothing to lose by giving them a ring.

The number is 0161 474 0551 - Fleet Garage off Coronation Street, Reddish
    near Halfords / Wickes etc.

Cool. cheers mate. Im not having Horns do anything, im just going to get the
gasket off them. But if what i am going to do doesnt remedy the problem i
have i will give them a ring. Funny, 'cause i work about 5 mins walk from
    halfords too... :)

Still sounds like the problem is in that area, could well be that the
stepper motor is sticking, not sure if this would show up on diagnostics
    though!!!

May get a price for new Motor and/or control valve setup to see if its worth
it then, Engine management light came on recently too, not on constantly
    though

Ive just started having this problem too, the engine light comes up on mine,
which i thought was a fault in the engine electronics unit, the car still
runs but sluggish with the light up, any ideas would be much appreciated.

I would find somewhere locally that has the kit to plug it in and diagnose.
My problems were sorted out after i cleaned the Air Intake Valve and took it
to a local place where the errors were reset.

I had a problem about 6 months ago where my engine management light was
coming on, lack of power, and it turned out to be the Cam and Crank shaft
sensors (may have name slightly wrong) and because i was at 81k miles i had
those and a cam belt kit put on. £150 in all.

i would look for a local guy with the kit to diagnose the problem, i used
Fleet Maintainence, off Coronation Street, Reddish, Stockport
(near Halfords / Wickes etc.) The number is 0161 474 0551. - you may need to
ask around a bit where you live

    Good luck :)

Had the same problem on my 2.0 SRi, cleaned the idle control valve with carb
cleaner and it solved the problem

I've had the same sort of problem in my calibra, turns out to the the
sensor in the exhaust system that measures the amount of un burnt fuel.
Where it should regulate the amount of fuel being delivered, it just runs at
full flow. Symptons sound the same.
Easiest thing to do , would be to take it to a vauxhall dealer and get them
to plug it in and test it.

How did you go on at Fleet? Did they manage to locate the problem?

Thanks for everyones replies,,,, I got a home tune guy to look at it and
    check the error codes
he said they was a ghost code in it,,,,whats that?!!!!!!!!!!!

    anyway he couldnt fix it
I will be trying some other things suggested here..... I looked at the fuel
    filter, and it looked like
it hadnt been changed for a while

This is fine for basic fault codes ... doesn't come even close to Tech 2
    analysis tho
