very bad smell of petrol coming from near filler cap or under wheel arch
area, have had a look and feel at all the fuel pipes but no sign of any
leaks or damp patches anywhere, any ideas welcomed

i had a similar problem with a 1996 1.8 vectra
really strong smeel of petrol when 1/2 full and above but not when less than
1/2
tank had rusted out around the seams of tank got one second hand vaux dealer
quoted £500+ to fit

there should be a fuel tank vent valve
unless ofcourse it just that summer is here....more evap.

i must admit ive had many do this before.
unless you can actually see leaking petrol, id forget it.

I had a smelly one too, the RAC man knew exactly where to look. Under the
back seat the top of the fuel tank is visible. On mine the gasket sealing
the level sensor had perished. whenever I filled right up some leaked out
and lay in a puddle on top of the tank

Rusty fuel tanks are quite common on these.
