After reading a few posts by other members I've managed to extract a fault
    code on my Vectra.
The code is 0443 which apparently means 'Evaporative emission control system
    purge control valve circuit malfunction.'

What does this actually mean? Is the valve faulty or is it something a bit
    deeper?

    Any thoughts would be great.

    Many thanks.

    Carbon canister control valve.

Fuel tanks are now sealed (no vent). A carbon canister (in O/S) wheel arch
stores the emissions from the tank. Under given circumstances (cruise) the
ECU opens the carbon canister purge valve (O/S wing near top of shocker)
allowing engine vacuum to purge the carbon canister.

The purge valve has 2 vac pipes (one to canister and one to inlet manifold)
    and a 2 pin connector.

Circuit malfunction can be faulty valve or faulty wiring
Make sure the valve is actually connected
One pin has live feed (ignition on)
Other is earthed by ECU under correct operating conditions.
Ohmmeter between pins (plug disconnected) is around 20-50 ohms.

Brilliant! Just the kind of explanation I was after.

    Much appreciated.
