Bought a 2001 2.2 Vectra 3 months ago. It had 83000mls and had been serviced
approx every 6 months (due to mileage) and had oil and filter changes by its
owner every 3000 mls. All are documented with all receipts for the oil and
filter changes. I developed coolant loss about a month ago and then the
mayonnaise appeared in the oil. I expected it to be the head gasket but it
turns out it is the head that has cracked......... Does anyone know if this
is a common problem with the 2.2 ecotech. I have owned Vauxhalls for the
past 12 years and this is the first major bill I have ever faced and to say
I am disappointed is an understatement.

    Cheers

Thanks for reply. I really didn't notice any significant change in the way
it pulled...in fact the car ran very well. I really do have to admit that I
may have drove it some what ' enthusiastically' on a more than quiet piece
of local road one evening ( but no more enthusiastically than I drive an
Astra 2.0lt turbo diesel response vehicle for the ambulance service), and I
believe that it should have coped with that. The gentleman I bought it off
seemed to have his head screwed on and didn't seem like someone who would
thrash it persistently.....but who knows!!! No, the car has been too well
looked after both mechanically and bodily for him to thrash it
everywhere.... he was quite upset to see it go. The blame has got to lay at
my door but I just wondered just how common a problem it was. So a new OE
head should see me right for another 83000 hopefully.

Outside chance - very outside - but talk to Vauxhall - they might be
interested. Don't know till you try. But be persistent don't be fobbed
    off at the first hurdle.
