My alternator is playing up, the output is 14v at idle and rises over 16
with a little revs. The charging warning light is on bright, and gets
brighter with revs. I am presuming the regulator has failed leaving the
exciting coils at max all the time.

I have got the alternator out, should I replace the regulator or buy a new
    alternator??

    Its a vectra 1997 1.6 16V.

Replace the regulator if you can. I think you will find the alternators
    arent exactly cheap!

Thanks. I have been quoted £30 for one from a scrap yard. When it comes on
Wednesday I will check the brushes and if there worn down, swap them with
the ones from my old on that are only 10% down after 78k miles. I think jump
starting cars over the last few months has done the damage. Lost count how
many friends I have bailed out this winter, but now I am paying the price
for leaving my engine running while jumping.
