I was appalled to discover that the Vauxhall recommended oil for my 1.8
Vectra 2006+, costs something like £60 for a 5L can. Good GOD!!

Now, Halfords sell oil which they declare to be suitable for most modern
cars for a fraction of that price. Given that my car travels less that 1000
miles a year, and certainly not at 100 mph, 'cos I is elderly(ish), would
anyone suppose that I could/not use that sort of oil, which I could,
possibly, afford? It hasn't had an oil change for about 3 years now - can't
    afford it, can I?

Do what i do my friend, compare the oil you should use with oil you can use.
Most oils today can be used on almost any thing that has multi moving parts.
Problem with expensive oils, they need to be changed to soon for my pocket.
I own a 1992 Holden Barina, almost the same car as a suzuki swift. I shopped
around and found the oil suitable for my car and at a good price, @13.50 for
5 litres. I have used it now for quite awhile. Like you i dont exceed the
speed limit and i wouldnt run more than 5,000 miles in a year.
I dont know what you have in the way of oils over your way, but the way i
see it, if the oil is cheap and works, use it. My car is out of warranty so
as long as it goes is the main thing.

    Bye
