Just having to replace my engine !

What had happened was the oil seal had gone in the turbocharger......The
other week the car starts throwing out a LOT of whiteish smoke, the revs go
sky high, I pull over, turn off the ignition, pull out the key get out
thinking it's gonna catch fire and it's still revving it's arse off !!

The more I talk to people about what happened, the MORE I hear about people
they know who have had the same experiences on other Vauxhalls, Astras and
Vectras... exactly the same thing happening, ie...oil seal gone in the
turbocharger and then it starts to suck oil from the engine and burn it
throwing the revs off the scale (even with the key out!) until it knackers
    the engine.

Do you think it could be cheap seals Vaux are using in the turbos?! Anyone
    else heard/seen this ???

Perhaps you should have dropped it into gear, stood on the brakes and dumped
the clutch to stall the motor. hard on the clutch, but easier on the wallet
than the position you find yourself in. 20/20 hindsight is a wonderfull
    thing

But more to the point, whats the age/mileage of the car? service history?
are you in with a chance of a warranty claim? I think if you are going to
try this then you need every I dotted and T crossed in the service history,
as vauxhall would probably say that a wrong kind of oil had (probably) been
    used.

Also, worth a try as an excuse for getting caught on a speed camera<g>

Yeah, all very good with the hindsight but as I was in the outside lane of
    the motorway,
none of that would have been particularly safe to be honest as I had no
    power, blowing
out lots of smoke into 3 lanes of traffic and coasting over to the hard
    shoulder...

Just out of warranty, 60k and full main dealer Vaux servicing.

Strange, the number of things that manage to go tits up just outside the
    warranty.

Still, if its JUST out of warranty, try approaching vauxhall anyhow. they
might meet you part way with the bill. (hint:don't come across as a hard
    ass). worth a try.....

  5. I have seen it in some who's turbo is sucking oil whilst running but not as
    you describe.
Sounds scary.Basically you've a jet engine by the sound of it.;o)
I suppose your Cat is knackered too.

Yeah, I've thought about the CAT, but will worry about next time it's due
    for an MOT.

Just in the process of having a replacement engine fitted. There wasn't
    much salvageable
from the knackered engine. The mechanic said there were metal filings in
    the sump!

Been speaking to a good few more people, mechanics etc and this scenario
    seems to
be a bit of a Turbo Diesel Timebomb !

Must be down to the turbochargers themselves, it's just a bloody shame that
    when that
fails there's no mechanism or 'cut off' for the engine, instead it just ends
    up wrecking the
    whole engine !

    :-(
