The computer said "check oil level", so I did and it was a little low. I
then noticed that the coolant tank had overspilled.
When opened, it was full of sludge, or oil.

Does this sound like a burst head gasket?
The car is a 2002 model, 47k. Always serviced.

There was no warning i.e. overheating etc.

    Thanks

Sounds more like the oil cooler has leaked. This lets oil get into the
    water.
It is sat in between the V's at the top of the engine. It is quite a big
job I'm afraid but cheaper than head gasket.

Yup, I agree with me140. Been there, done that, and got the
    (warranty) t-shirt.

I didn't wait for the computer to tell me the oil was low though.

Just got the same problem with my 2.5 Omega. Any idea how much this will
    cost to repair?

Well I managed to fix the oil cooler on my Omega 2.5 v6 without much
trouble. Put everything back together, car seemed to be running o.k. The
next day however my wife was going to work in the car and the oil pressure
warning light came on at low revs after about 3 miles. Once the engine had
cooled the pressure was o.k untill the engine warmed up again. Any ideas?
Could it have something to do with replacing the oil cooler? Any suggestions
    would be much apprecited.
    Keith.
