    Hi!

Opened the oil lid when engine was running (probably a stupid thing to do
but...), however there was some fume and smoke coming from the hole. Not
    much, but noticeable
I may once heard that smoke is sign of worn piston rings...is this true?

PS! Just had an oilchange....could it be overfilled?

    Hi,

My Cavalier was the same - it went on to do 225k miles before the bodywork
fell apart and I had to scrap the car.

It also flew past all the emissions tests at MOT so the engine was rock
    solid.

    I wouldn't worry.

  3. Bloody hell Chris, what engine was in your Cavalier? What reg?

    That's given me some hope - I've a 2.0 16v Cavalier with 140k and a Vectra
    2.5 GSi with 180k.

No need to part-ex those babies yet then!

    Cheers,
    David.

Just seen a Cavalier 1.8 L reg, used to be a Taxi, with 240,000 on same
    engine and box.

Yep true 225k and still going - cam was is perfect nick - I put it down to
regular oil changes - not the fancy stuff either, the £8 stuff out of
Morrisons (Texaco brand). It was a 1.8 L model as well.

Would have kept it except for the body work was rotten.

I've a lot of confidence in Vauxhall engines.

I'll say this though - the 'G' reg Cavalier was a much better car then my
new Astra. They don't build em like they used to.
