Steamed up Astra

Discussion in 'Astra' started by Howard Funnell, Nov 13, 2005.

  1. Hi

    I have just brought a 1.6 GLS (auto)1995 MK3 Astra today.

On the way home the windows started misting up, Hot air from the fan cleared
the problem, but as soon as I turned the fan down the mist reappeared.

I quick check of the front footwell showed that the carpets and mats were
    wet.

I suspect that the heater matrix or hoses to it are leaking, has anybody had
a similar experience and is this a common fault.

Or am I barking up the wrong tree, maybe its the windscreen leaking?
incidentally the car is fitted with a sunroof.

    Any ideas would be welcome

    Thanks Howard

I think if heater was leaking you might be able to smell it. but far simpler
to see if water level is dropping. Odds favour windscreen or sunroof. try
    checking the sunroof drain.

you might want to check under the bonnet back, centre where the heater air
    intake is.
there is a rubber tube for drainage
if a garage did some work on the steering rack they may have pinned it up
out of the way and forgotten it after.
which means the air intake drains into the car instead :)

check the drain holes/tubes down from the sunroof (front left &/or right)

take out the pollen filter (behind cover in glove box or beneath cover under
windscreen, open bonnet) and either replace it, if is blackened or dry it
    out.

Maybe have a look at the plenum drain to make sure it is not blocked,
resulting in the heater inlet flooding into the car

  6. Thanks for the suggestions everybody.

The pollen filter was soggy, mouldy and had small mushrooms growing on it!

I tried to post a picture but the post never appeared

This car has a full service history . I have receipts for all the services
and as far as I can see the filter has only been changed once in 60,000
miles!!!! When it was refitted the sealing strip on the plastic cover was
not re-seated , thus allowing water onto the filter.

All I to do now is dry the interior of the car.
