    Hi all

Can anyone help - I have a three-year-old Meriva. It has recently started to
intermittently squeal when travelling in a straight line. It does not do it
all the time but it usually comes after ½ hour driving on cold days.

The squeal is not speed dependent and disappears when the steering wheel is
turned _ 1/8 turn either way or the brakes are applied.

It seem to be coming from the back but high frequencies can be difficult to
pin point but to add some credence for this it also disappears if the
    handbrake is pulled on slightly.

It can also disappear if sitting stationary for a while, This would seem to
indicate a brake heating up and cooling down but the hand on the wheel test
does not show any wheel significantly hotter that any other and the brakes
work and pull up fine also the car has recently in end October passed an MOT
    test with no problems.

    Has anyone had similar problems?

got any ideas what it may be?

    No

    It is a 1.6 8V

Reason I asked is because there is/was a problem with the 1.8 Corsas
(virtually same design as Meriva) as they have rear disk brakes, and
the pads catch causing a whining, squealy noise. If the disks/calipers
are the same part on the 1.6 then it's likely to be the same problem.

    Hi again

Point taken, If it is the pads catching is it the pads or the disk or both?

I have had the wheels off at the back and the pads look OK i.e not worn and
the wheel turned OK I cleaned the dust off and to be fair it did seem to
cure the problem for a few days but as it returned I thought I would ask the
    world for there opinion.
