Went to my local auto store with the old broken belt and was given the
correct size (was told 2mm out but shouldn't matter) checked it myself when
at home and both belts appear to be exactly same. I expected to find an
adjustable wheel of some kind to be able to get the belt on, instead the
belt has gone on over all the 4 wheels without any adjustment and just
doesn't seem to be tight enough to me. I have a 98 astra 1.6 petrol. Can
anyone describe ( in simple terms please) which way round the wheels the
belt runs, an idea how tight it should be and how the fitting would normally
be done on this model as I am sure I have done something wrong help!!!

I don't know what belt you are talking about but from the way you ask the
question you shouldn't be doing the job.

The cost of a badly fitted or pattern cambelt going wrong isn't worth
    risking.

If it's the serpentine belt, check your email for routing.
