The rev counter has packed up on the above car, any ideas what it can be?

    Thanks in advance

    Alternator might be worth checking

The rev counter is driven off the back of the altenator.
Check that the drive cable is ok.

Any squealing noises from the alternator belt, check if it is tight enough,
if so then the alternator is poorly, I've had it twice.

AND dont forget that the altenator also drives the vacumn pump for the
brake servo - a bit safty critical that.
As the OP mentions if it squeals loundly under load and the belt is
tight enough you are in for a bit of a nasty suprise. New ones cost £160
+ from Vauxhaul. Dont know about re-conditioned units or repairing the
    old one.
