    A couple of questions

I am going to replace my CDR500 with a VDO CD773MP3 VX

    1. Very daft question
Do I need to disconnect the battery first?

    2. Will I need to replace the original cage or will the new head unit
    just slide in and reconnect?

    Thanks

No, you don't need to disconnect the battery first.

    I haven't fitted a 773 although I have done a 723. You will probably
need to fit a new cage but it comes with the cage and it is easy to do.
You might need a torx drive to remove the old cage and you just fold
the tabs in to clip the new cage into place.

You disconnect the plugs/cables from the old cage and they should just
    plug into the new unit
