Questions on door key Vetra 1996

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by Adrian Hodgson, Oct 14, 2005.

  1. New to group, I have looked through all the posts my news reader will give
and not seen similar post so here goes.

A have picked up from the local auction a 1996 Vectra 1.8 GLS.

I have sorted a out a problem with the engine (new head gasket, cambelt
etc). and that now runs fine.
I only have one key for the car and this does not contain any bits of
    electrics that I can see.

I can unlock the door and start the engine. But when I open the door after
being locked for a little while, the flashers always go off. The sounder
should be going off but this has been removed!!!

Now I have no security tags or numbers for the car. I am confused that I can
still operate the car if it meant to have a a security coded key. I will
be taking a trip to a breakers yard to pick up a few bits including the
owners handbook if it helps describe the systems. The passenger side doors
do not unlock electronically, but I have guessed this is a separate fault.

Can anyone please shed any light on how the key system should work?

Could I expect Vauxhall to be able to get me a coded key fob or does any
    others provide this service?

I have lots of small faults with the car but will leave these for another
    post.

The car drives well an certainly a lot more responsive then the old Astra
1.7 diesel I had before the cambelt snapped.

    Cheers

    Adrian

If you open up the key inside there is a rectangular dark grey "chip". Made
of a graphite type material. It has no wires or batteries. This turns the
car immobiliser off allowing it to run.
As it sounds like your car has an alarm you should also have a "fob" with 2
buttons to lock/unlock the car and turn the alarm off. You will need to buy
a fob (dealer only I think) and get a dealer to "code" it into your car. For
this you will need the car security code - a four digit number that is on a
credit card size piece of card along with the VIN number, engine number, key
number and radio code. If you haven't got the code a dealer can apply to
Vauxhall for it so don't worry - costs about £15.
    Hope this helps

  3. Thanks for that time to contact Vauxhall. I was wondering if I get a key fob
from a breakers yard if they can re-use that.

Yes a used fob will recode - problem will be getting the right one. Choice
is 2 makes - Megamoss and Bosch and 2 frequencies - 433mhz and 433.92mhz. If
you ask nicely at your local dealer they may tell you which one you need. A
Vectra with no alarm has a different make/frequency to a car with an alarm.
If you find a car at the breakers with an alarm and fobs you could always
just take the fobs and alarm ecu and then you won't need to worry about
    coding.

Thanks for that time to contact Vauxhall. I was wondering if I get a key fob
from a breakers yard if they can re-use that.

  5. Would I also need to have the chips from the keys as well?

    Thanks for the information.
