question about hydraulic tappets

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by Titled Gentleman, Sep 5, 2005.

  1. I recently bought an R- reg Vauxhall Vectra with low mileage.
I got in for a good price because the oil pump had seized up and ruined the
    engine.
I bought a replacement short engine and rebuilt the engine using the
    original top end.
The camshafts were in good condition so I saw no problem.

That was until I started it today for the first time and the top end rattled
    badly.
I ran the car for 5 minutes to circulate the oil to the tappets but this did
    not help.

Does the oil pump failure automatically ruin the hydraulic tappets?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

If when you take the oil cap off you can see oil being splashed about then
hold revs about 2500rpm for 5 mins or so and see how you get on. Valve
    timing is ok isn't it?

Hmmm, how likely is it that an oil pump suddenly seizes up? Maybe the
cambelt snapped or something (ruining the valve train)
