hi, keys can be re programmed by putting them in the ignition
and pressing a button on them I believe, does that mean
a key that once opened another Vauxhall can be reprogrammed to open
    another?

    thanks for any advice

iirc you can only do that for a short time after the ignition is switched on
.... I'm guessing it would only have a short range so only the key in the
ignition or very close to it would be re-programmed. tbh I'm not even sure
if the key is actually re-programmed rather than just re-synched with the
    central locking.

I'm sure I'll be corrected if anything I've said is wrong :)

The key is coded to each car so you cant just swap them between cars -
wouldn't thieves love that!!. When they go out of sync you can do the
ignition thing but it will only work on the car it was programmed to.

I've had a 'bleat' about this before in this newsgroup. But....

The keys are never reprogrammed. If you get a new key, Vauxhall charge you
£25 to plug a hand held computer into your cars computer. They press a
button on the hand held computer and press the button on the key at the same
time. This simply instructs the cars computer to accept the new code from
    the new key.

Putting the key in the ignition, as was said only synchronises a key that
the cars computer has already been programmed to accept.

If you want a new key the best option is to buy one off ebay and then get
Vauxhall to make the car accept its codes.

The reason I'm bleating.....it cost me £25 and took Vauxhall all of 5
seconds. I felt slightly RIPPED OFF.
