Omega cutting-out at idle.

Discussion in 'Omega' started by Patrick E. King, Jan 24, 2006.

  1. Anybody have ideas what might cause my '98 Omega B 2L Petrol Ecotec to
    cut-out regularly at idle.
Seems to be more frequent when engine hot. Always seems to happen at the
    most awkward times!
IAC valve is relatively new having been replaced to eliminate a similar
problem but at that time the cutting-out was accompanied by engine racing at
idle whereas this time there is no engine racing happening. Could it still
be the IAC Valve needs cleaning/replacement again or are there other items I
    should consider?
    TIA
    Patrick.

  3. Thanks, I'll give it a good cleaning and see if that sorts it.
It's just that I thought it would not require cleaning yet as it's only in
use for a little over a year.
I thought perhaps the problem lay elsewhere.

Were the breathers cleaned out at the same time as the ICV? If not then
the new/clean one could get gunked up pretty quickly.

As the rest below clean the ICV especially if you do mostly short runs. If
it was the MAF you'd get an engine management light.

  6. I'm not sure breathers are fitted. Are you talking about the modification
kit which I believe was released some years back? Because if you are then I
don't have one. When I replaced the ICV just over a year ago I did replace
the hose which comes from the front of the rocker cover. (Closest thing to a
    breather that I can see!)
    Thanks

  7. Yes mostly short runs alright.
Just this afternoon cleaned and re-fitted so too soon to say if it's sorted!
    Thanks
    Patrick.

Yep the one from the front, but also check the one at the back of the
rocker cover on the right hand side - looking from the front of the car
    towards the back.

  9. I just got around to checking this one at the rear today and it was totally
    gunged-up and blocked!
I managed to clear it somewhat without removing the vertical pipe which
appears to go down to the sump.
Ideally, I would prefer to remove the pipe and clear it properly but it
looks like it won't be easy to get at!
    Any ideas or recommendations please?
    Regards
    Patrick.

like yoy ive never really looked at how to get it right off.
but i normally use a welding rod and run it up don a few times then stick a
pipe on the end and see if i can blow!
    you can!

  11. Thanks for that Mike...I used the dipstick to unblock it but I don't like
the idea of some or any of the remaining crud going down into the sump!
Then again, perhaps it doesn't go to the sump?
Could I just vent it to atmosphere?

well when ive done mine and a few of the staff cars, that's method has
worked well and normally don't see a build up again for aleast a year.
the crud is not that bad and the oil filter should be able to cope with it
    anyway.

got to admit not too sure what happens to it by my method but i don't see
    any bad effects.

dunno about venting it, though that's a thought, put a blow pipe down the
botton of the tube and blow the stuff out the top!
better than me other idea....suck it out urh! maybe warming might help it
    liquify and run back down?
