Oil

For various reasons my P reg 1.4 Corsa was very low on oil so I filled it
from the container of engine oil my husband keeps in the garage. This
apparently was wrong. He says that old fashioned 20/50 oil is not suitable
for a modern relatively high performance engine like mine. Is he just trying
to stop me using his supply of oil or is he serious? What damage if any is
it likely to do to the engine? Will it do for a while or should I get it
changed?

If it's of a different grade to what was already lubricating the engine
(which I guess it is based on what you've said) then I can't imagine
that's a good thing. I would want to take it down to a garage (or DIY
if you can) to have a full oil drain then filter and oil change -
shouldn't be too expensive.

how much did you put in
[and if you say half the container i'll scream!]

look up the oil capacity of your engine
if you think you put more than half
[say 2 litres+ into a 4 litre capacity engine]
then i'd drain it

if it was less then i would not worry forget about it..

BTW
just because you are a female it does not mean you cannot drain the oil out
yourself
it is piss easy to do. just dont do it while the engine is hot oil burns!

Some oil is better than no oil,and you can always go and get it changed.

This goes for changing wheels too ! Checking the tyre pressure/condition,
oil, water etc etc.....

It should be a 10W/40 semi synthetic oil such as Castrol GTX Magatec or
Vauxhall's own semi-synthetic. You won't kill the engine with 20W/50
mineral oil but it is worth changing it shortly. National Tyre depots
do a £20 'ish oil & filter change.
