My 97 Astra is also drinking too much oil, compared to my previous H-reg
Cavalier 1.8 8valve which didn't use any oil even after 165,000 miles.
I found this info on some website - talking about the Astra 91-98.
"Valves of 16vs may stick if run on cheap detergent-free petrol.
Unfortunately Vauxhall's cure for this seems to have been to ream out the
valve guides a bit too much with the result that many 16v 1.6s have become
oil burners"
So it looks like we're stuck with the problem.
Sam
I simply can't believe it's an official Vauxhall procedure
to ream out valve guides.
This smacks of a cheap bodge-up job to allow dealers to make
inflated profit by not replacing the guides but charging for it.
Alternatively it's done at the request of the customer who
doesn't want to pay for the cost of replacement guides.
