    Hi.

I brought a Vauxhall astra in august last year t reg with 084687 on the
    clock

I went to Weymouth in United Kingdom for a week drove it round not any
problems at all came home checked the oil no change. Then two days later
went to barmouth in United Kingdom Got back home checked oil no change went
back to work for a week then I checked the oil level to my surprise the oil
level had dropped to half way total mileage I had done was 087607 = 2920
    miles.

Now I topped the oil back up. I have done 1300 miles now and the level is
below half way it seems to be using it more now when I got the car I used to
check it every week with now change.

Does anybody now what the problem is there is no smoke when I start it or
when I drive it. Also I get a rattle at the top when I start it in the
morning for a 2 seconds not all the time. Using 10w/40 oil.

that's a lot of oil for it not to be burning it, or leaking it.
have you checked the water, any yellow furry bits in it?

The rattle or ticking from the top end might be down to worn hydraulic
tappets or seals - losing the oil from the tappet, then filling-up again
    when you start up.

I don't think this would be connected to the oil loss.

    Hows the radiator water?

Perfectly normal on a vauxhall. I started using synthetic oil in mine
& the lifters filled up much quicker.

Sorry, don't agree that its normal, based on my experience - unless its
normal if you hardly use the car (read on)....

I've had several so far with the OHC engine, and only one made this noise.
That was at 20k, and was fixed under Network Q.

The particular car had had 20k of use in about 5 years since new, so I put
it down to the type of usage.

Car subsequently covered a further 70k in my ownership, mainly around town
use, holidays and as a runabout for my wife, and the problem never recurred.
Daily use, distances mainly < 15 miles (apart from hols of course, when the
    car towed a caravan)

Similar vehicles I have sold-on at 120k again with no problem, but use
changed to motorway commute, 30 miles each way.

The old 1256 OHV engine, now, was another matter .....

    Hope this helps ....

Every car I've ever owned (and my family's) with hydraulic valve
lifters have made some extra noise at startup for a second or two while
    the lifters fill up.
So for me at least, it's normal :)
