MK4 Astra Oil Leak

Discussion in 'Astra' started by Dean Carpenter, Oct 3, 2004.

  1. Hi,

I have a mjor oil lead at the cambelt end of my engine. I cant see where
it's coming from but it's been leaking a while. All over the engine, the
suspension and now the brakes. Does anyone out there know of a notorious
place where these cars leak oil from?

If it's the crankshaft oil seal, am I taling mega money to fix?

Any help please as its ruining my driveway!

As far as I'm aware there are no known issues as you've described. There are
3 likely places, however. The camshaft seal (high). The crankshaft seal
(low). The oil pump housing (low). Ask a local garage if they have a leak
disclosing kit. This comprises of a special dye, and ultra violet light,
which will pinpoint the leak, and shouldn't break the bank.

  3. I will do just that - I never thought of that, I knew it existed for
water/AC leaks but thought never crossed my mind for an oil leak!

    Thanks

If it's REALLY bad, It's usually the oil pump to
cylinder block gasket thats blown. You will find the gasket has been
modified. From a green paper type to a metal "compression" type.
To replace do the job proper you'll need:-

    Oil pump to block gasket,
    Sump pan gasket,
    Front crank oil seal,
Oil pump pick-up pipe gasket, to oil pump,
    Cam belt,
    fresh oil and filter,
    silicone sealant.

To be honest, It's a pretty "involved" job to do. However, with
patience and a good manual you should be able to do this yourself.
Feel free to post any questions you have about this.
    Regards
