misty headlamps

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by richard BUNNING, Sep 11, 2003.

  1. Has anyone come across the problem of condensation on the inside of Astra
headlamps. I have a 2002 Astra coupe and the nearside headlamp mists up, the
off side doesn't my local dealer says its a common "fault" and won't change
the headlamp because vauxhall has said that its not a problem and all that
i need to do is drive for 20 minutes or so with the headlights on and they
will clear.Any feedback on this will be gratefully received as i'm not
    convinced by vauxhalls answer.

Obviously the headlamp seal has gone allowing moisture into the unit. This
would constitute an MoT failure. I think Vauxhall should replace it under
    warranty.

I would ring up Vauxhall Customer Care and discuss it.

The problem probably happened because of a misaligned bonnet hitting the
headlamp. The two stops ought to be adjusted ASAP.

I also think they ought to do something about the misting but talk to
    Vauxhall.

    Hi,

This is a common 'problem' - which (I've been told) is caused by the heat of
the halogen lamps, and indeed, it will clear after a few minutes of the
lights been on. I have experienced this personally with the driving lights
on my Astra, as well as knowing of the issue on nearly a whole fleet's worth
    of company Vectras!

Of course if they don't clear themselves the chances are that a seal is
    broken somewhere.

    Hope this is of help.
    Dan.

I'm assuming your car is still under warranty - if so DO NOT follow this
advice! (Yes I know it sounds odd...)

    otherwise read on ..

I've tackled ths problem in the past - as long as the reflector isn't
damaged and there are no cracks or holes in the headlamp

    1) Buy a can of seek 'n seal

    2) Pick a nice hot sunny day

    3) remove offending headlamp, and leave in direct sunshine until
    condensation disappears

    4) run SeeknSeal around the seal between the glass and the reflector -
several times, just to make sure it well sealed

    5) Put headlamp back in, and keep an eye on it

    Cheers
