Missing Electric Fan on Astra Air-con

    Hi

On a friends older Astra, it has two fans on the radiator at the front of
the car. One is behind to cool the cars cooling system, the other on the
front to the left hand side, slightly smaller to cool the air-conditioner
    radiator.

On my 2002 Astra 3 door, I am missing the front air-conditioner cooling fan
(I do have air-conditioning), the mounting bracket is clearly there, just no
fan assembly. I thought perhaps being a newer car they didn't them anymore,
but also saw a brand new Zafira that had the exact same fan arrangement as
the older Astra I compared it to.

So is this is a mistake, should I have the second fan but at some point it
was removed for some repair and never got put back (I haven't had the car
from new and have had previous car repairs where they have come back with
things missing!). The air-conditioning seems to work fine, but I just have
a nagging feeling that if I ever get stuck in traffic not moving and with
the air-con on, that without the electric fan to cut in and draw air over
it, the air-conditioning is going to mal-function in some way.

Anyone know if this is normal to only have one fan?

    Regards

  2. On my '02Astra I'm sure I have a fan and an extra rad in front of the
    regular rad.

    Hi

Do you just have the one fan, or one fan on the rear rad and one on the
    front, so 2 in total?

  4. I have 2 radiators, each with a fan. one radiator in front of the other.

The rearmost one has a very big fan behind it, and very wide hoses going to
it - this must be the engine radiator.

The other has a fan in front of it, and narrower tubes running to what I
take to be the pump for the aircon, driven by the alternator belt.

    I hope this helps.

    Hi

Thank you. It seems likely I am missing the front fan, although I can not
find wires or a plug that might connect to one, but these could easily have
dropped out of sight. I will get in touch with dealer I got the car from
and seem what there take is.

Vauxhall only fit one fan now - at the rear.
The air con just uses the rear fan to "suck" the air through instead of a
front fan to "blow" it through.
Looks like it should have one as the studs are still there but it doesn't.

The OP's was a 2002 Astra. Mine is a 2003. Mine has the two fans so they
were still fitting 2 up until the 03 plate at least.

    Hi

Thanks for the information. I have seen a brand new Zafira that had the
front mounted fan (of course this might be because it is a bigger car so has
a larger air-con system). Vin has posted he has a 2003 Astra with both
fans, so with mine being 2002 without, it wouldn't seem to appear to be
newer cars don't need them now. It makes sense about using the main fan,
however way did they not do that all along?

I have written to the dealer so will see what they say.
