Lost my car key!

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by ßødincµs²°°°, Jul 30, 2006.

  1. As per subject, I've lost one of my Vectra keys.
With a high probability was left / fell besides the car.
The car is still there, but the key is gone.
Apart from the fact that I am temporarily "enforcing" the safety
measures (chain locks) for the night, is there any way to make the key
useless without changing all the locks?
Probably not, because it's enough to open the car, start it, then push
one button of the key to reprogram it on the new immobilizer code, isn't
    it?
Is there any other solution to this problem, apart of hitting my head
with a hammer, to be sure I don't do this again?
Now for the painful part: how much will it cost to replace the whole lot
of locks and keys? It's cheaper to buy a new car? :)
Thanks a lot for all your help.

  2. Not sure about Vauxhall but on my last Chrysler I was having alarm
trouble and the dealer re-programed my keys but only did one, while the
spare could unlock the car it would not start it.

How about asking vauxhall to reprogram the cars computer not to accept the
existing key code, and buy another key which the computer can then be
programmed to accept. That way at least the car will still be immobilised
if someone gets in with the old key...I think but check this with the key
you have (i.e lock car remotely, unlock manually and try to start).

The key in the ignition method synchronises the existing key only if it
already works OK, it does not reprogram the key or change the key in anyway.
So you can't bang in a key and get the cars computer to accept its codes
    using this method.

Maybe worth asking whether its possible to change the keys transponder as
    well..

Quote from another related thread "I was told by my Vauxhall dealer never to
open the door with the key if I had locked it with the remote as the alarm
    would go off."

Worth a quick call to your friendly neighbourhood vauxhall man.

Getting the keys erased by a dealer is a good idea to stop anyone driving it
away but they will still be able to open it using the lock in the door. The
only permanent cure is to change the locks so the key is totally useless.
Have you checked with your insurance company - both car and home - to see if
    you have any cover?

Yes, but you can do that with a brick!

Thanks Chris, will do. But I'd like to be 100% sure that nobody can
snatch in the car with the old key, so I'm headed to fork out to replace
    the lot. :-£££

But a brick won't fit in the ignition! :) And remember is a Vauxhall
Vectra, the price of the brick is probably more of the value of the
car... :))))) (a little bit of self-inflicted dark humour is the only
cure for my state of mind in this very moment...!)

I'm thinking more in terms of stealing valuables from the car.
