Apparently my vectra had 4 indicator bulbs where the orange paint had
burned off. Is this possible? I have never heard of it.

    Yes, it is annoyingly common.

A lot of manufacturers have clear lenses with orange bulbs and the orange
bulbs lose their colour with time.

An indicator showing a white light is a popular MOT failure!

I thought it sounded like a popular moneymaker, but when I picked up
the car, the indicators were more orangy.

Unfortunately, one of them has stopped working this morning, and I now
have a high frequency rear indicator.

    Grrrrr.

they are not expensive to replace anyhow, but alans right, the paint just
flakes off after a while resulting in an MOT failure.

Well they changed it with no trouble, since they sold me them the day
    before.

A quick tip, for anyone that is interested:

To change the front passenger side indicator on a vectra, it is
difficult to get at (there is a fuze box or something behind it, and
access is still difficult when you move it). The bloke at the garage
put a screwdriver down a gap to push a tab, and popped out the
indicator lens assembly. Then it is easy to remove the bulbholder,
    and push it back in.
