Hello...we are having to arrange a cambelt change on Corsa for an elderly
relative. The car is a 1997 R reg 1.4 3-door automatic, and the garage who
will be doing the work needs to know whether it is an 8 or 16 valve engine.
Although we have the handbooks and reg document, there's nothing that I can
find to indicate precisely which model it is, and as she lives some distance
away I can't lift the bonnet and rummage around to check for myself.
According to the Parkers web-site most 1.4 engines seem to be 16-valve, but
I guess maybe not all are. Cany anyone advise please?

    Thanks in advance.

If the garage that will be doing the work can't tell from looking at it I
    fear for the worst!
16valve ones usually say 16v on the back - top of engine is a big plastic
    silver cover on 16valve.

If its simply for the purpose of getting quotes - get a quote for both
versions, then when choosing the garage just let them check for themselves
    when you take it in.

The garage that will be doing the work is 30+ miles from where I and the
garage are located, so they haven't had access to the car. If it was closer
to home I'd have lifted the bonnet and found out for myself. They probably
just wanna make sure they have the right cambelt in stock I guess....
I've had plenty of work done at this garage - they are OK (famous last
    words....)

If you email me the registration number I can tell you the engine
model/type/number. The garage could also do this via his Vauxhall
dealer so that they supply the right parts.

While they are at it it would be a good idea to do the rollers and
    tensioner at the same time.

Alan...thanks for the offer of help. Spoke to garage today and they are just
going to order both repair kits and return the 'wrong' one to their
    wholesaler.
I did have a look for a web-site that could decode the VIN or engine number
but gave up after umpteen dead ends.
However, I'll take you up on your offer if it's still open!
The VIN is W0L000073V4414599, engine # is 02FX1203.

    Many thanks Alan......

Alan....spot on! The replacement belt was fitted yesterday and the car will
be returned this week. Ain't it nice when posts and replies are helpful!

    Thanks again!
