How do you adjust your handbrake

i recently replaced my rear brake pads on my astra 1.6 d and the handbrake is comming up 8 or 9 clicks before holding i have removed the centre console but the adjustment plate that you are ment to press downward and pull the mechanisim backward doesnt seem to work any one else had this problem thanks in adance
