Handbrake light not showing when handbrake applied

I have a 2009 Antara auto and when I switch the car on, all the dash lights show including the handbrake light. Once the vehicle starts they all go out including the handbrake light even though the handbrake is still applied. I have adjusted the cable as it was slack, but the light still doesn't come on even though it is applied and the car won't budge.

I would have thought sensor but not sure why car won't move ?

edit: do you know if on a vectra c 1.9 if the handbrake can be adjusted ? it is part of the caliper .
