I have a 'B type' Frontera which has wiring connectors for the towbar
electrics in the panel behind the left hand wheel arch (where the jack
    lives).

Could anyone in this group please very kindly tell me the route for
the wiring cable from the towbar socket into this panel, as I really
can't find an obvious route. Does the cable feeds though the back of
the rear lens unit by chance?

Very many thanks for any help in advance.

Unlikely, if it was anything like my astra estate but look for a large
plastic plug about 25mm in diameter in the floor pan in this area.
Mine was in the jack storage bin.Cable fed through from rear light cluster
by a channel into bin then out through floor pan plug to towbar.
