Emmissions control rant

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by Bob Smith \(UK\), Jul 8, 2005.

  1. How much do the modern emissions equipment save in fumes? I had a crank
sensor replaced, and it failed in 2 days. I had another one fitted, and it
has been fine for about a year now.

I got thinking, how much does it harm the environment to manfacture all the
modern trappings of a modern injection engine, as opposed to the fuel
efficiency / emmissions savings over a carburetor?

Catalytic convertors were brought in as law because they were "sold" as
reducing pollutants in traffic. They do no such thing. In standing
traffic, they cool down too much, and stop working, so have no effect on
    pollution in towns and cities!

Also, people go on about solar power... A solar cell uses more energy in its
manufacture than it generates in it's lifetime. Hardly the way forwards.

Many of the sensors are used to enable more efficient running of the engine,
rather than to reduce pollutants. There is a new generation of cats coming
soon, which promise more efficiency, however, if yours cools down to quick,
it is either poor design, or faulty. Concerning future fuels, the new
hydrogen driven cars seem to be gaining a foothold, with Honda at the
forefront of developing this new generation of water powered vehicles. Yes,
I did say water. It involves using a platinum catalyser to separate the
hydrogen from the oxygen, and using the hydrogen as a fuel. More info can be
    gained by an internet search.

    regards.
