did an oil change on my astra and the plug threads went tight then loose,
think they are about to give out. managed to get it to hold but am unsure if
there is a simple way to solve the problem. ie bigger plug or new sump any
    help would be welcome

  2. Next time don't do it up so tightly!

I would have though it will cost you a new sump but someone may well have a
    fix.

Loctite used to a thread repair liquid. Not the same thing as the thread
locking stuff. I've a bottle buried in the shed somewhere. Don't know if
they still do it. Maybe a search on the Web will answer that.

Other than that a helicoil insert would be cheaper than a new sump and at
least as cheap as oversizing the thread and plug.

They also wear out, oil cahnges every 5K miles up to 160K miles did that
on my old Isuzzu 1.7 cav. Cost £90 for a new sump.
