Dodgy water pump - but, what to do?

I've an '03 Zafira 16v 1.8 Petrol and reckon, going by other posts,
that the water pump runs off the timing belt. I'd had the timing belt
changed 25k ago. If it does run off the timing belt, should I get both
the timing kit + water pump done at same time?
I might be wrong, but with a quick check under the hood, I'd thought
that the water pump ran off the alternator belt. It might be different
engine specs. If not, what does run off the alternator belt?

On mine, just the air con compressor and alternator are on the same belt. I
had both pump and belt + tensioner + pulleys changed

Seeing as a new belt is about 10 -15 quid you may aswell get it
    changed at the same time.

If the water pump is badly worn then catastrophic failure might be
    imminent.

    Thanks Gio and adder1969,

adder - Having read the previous posts on the subject, I'd taken the
decision to keep the car off the road. Luckily I'd recently bought a
second car recently, so no great hassle.

Gio - It must have been the air con compressor that I was looking at
then! (As I said, it was a quick look!).

Car's booked in to a local garage on Monday.

    Thanks again.

I hope it goes OK, my pump and belt and tensioner / roller kit fitting cost
in the order of £175 at a VX dealer :-(

Thats pretty cheap compared to the cost when one of them breaks. Trust me on
    this :-(

It was checked on Monday - yip, water pump was flapping about on it's
    bearings.
£225 all in (parts, labour, VAT), for timing belt kit + water pump.
    Also,
New discs needed so, discs and pads all round - £285 all in.
I think the prices are pretty good, probably as it's a village garage.

I've had little done on the car in the last four years, so at 67k
miles, I'm not surprised at it needing £500+ worth of work.

Thanks for letting us know of the outcome, it gives others an idea of going
rates etc. At least you should be OK for a few more K's :)

    Happy motoring.

Mine needed water pump and belt, new discs and pads all round and in
parts it was about £100 so I guess I saved myself 400 quid by getting
    my hands dirty.

    Concur entirely!
In my younger days, I'd be 'under the bonnet' at the weekends.
I had Novas and they were a joy to work on.
Alas, I have no time to do it, what with work and family.
