Hi I have a 1998 1.7 Diesel Vauxhall Corsa, its done 155,000 miles.

Recently my car has not been able to start when it is warm.

It will start without any problems when cold. However when trying to
start once warm it will make a fairly fast and loud fan like noise, I
am not sure that the engine is actually being turned over. Once left
alone for a few minutes the car will start without any problems.

Glow plugs were replaced earlier this year. Starter motor was worked
    harder
than usual last winter because glow plugs were on the way out. This
    problem
has only just started, once it began to get cold for this winter.

Any suggestions as to what it could be? I have heard that starter
    motors for
this car are expensive, would anyone know how much just incase it has
    gone?

    Thanks in advance,

    Chris

  2. It sounds as though the starter motor is sticking - the pinion is not being
thrown into engagement with the flywheel ring gear. This could be down to a
weak solenoid, or the pinion is sticking on the motor shaft rather than
    sliding freely.

A genuine starter from Vauxhall is in the region of £190 +VAT for an
exchange unit. This does not include fitting, and the prices may have
changed in the year or so since I last fitted one.

Although you should be able to get one for about half that from a motor
factors. It does sound like it's sticking when hot in which casr stripping
it & cleaning it (NOT greasing/oiling it ) may fix it anyway.

    Bloody Dear arnt they!
I had a Exchange Unit done on exactly the same engine about 12 mths ago,
that ( and i have the invoice in front of me) was £215 Fitted

The Mechanic commented on it being a real Barstool of a job....

Now about 12mths later i have a starting problem..

When the car is COLD and not been used for a few hours when i start the
engine i get the normal engine being started noise..... then once the engine
"bites" it get an extra "whir grating noise" for about 1 second after I
release the key from the spring loaded position.....

i still get this even if the crank the engine for a few seconds and then
release the key just before it bites, but the noise is still there, but does
stop when the engine stops going over ( even though its not fired - if you
    get my meaning)

    Thanks

    TOM

sound like the flyback spring on the starter motor pinion is jammed with
road gunk or has gone weak & the flywheel is grinding it cause it is not
    travelling back home enough
