The tacho on my wife's 1996 Corsa 1.5 TD has suddenly stopped working. A
mate of mine reckoned it could be a faulty alternator but the warning light
for battery charging is not lit. I've checked the fuses but all are sound.
I'm at a loss so would appreciate any genuine advice from the experienced
    peeps on this board.

    Thanks in advance.

Not sure for this specific car, but it is common practice for diesels to
take an impulse from the alternator to power the rev counter. if this goes
tits up then it wouldne always show a charging fault. suggest checking
connections to alternator. the relevant one will probably be a spade. if you
see any like this, just unplug/replug (obviously not with it running!) and
see if it helps. could mean a new alternator though.

A phase died on the alternator on our old Cavalier 1.7TD (Isuzu engine).
When this happened the Air Bag light would flash every now and again
(usually when the engine was being revved hard). And the Rev Counter would
    be intermittent.

Also on a relatives 1.7TD (Isuzu engine) Astra, the alternator died totally
and the Airbag light would be on permanently and the rev counter stopped
    working totally.

Thanks Mike - I'll check that. The alternator was replaced at great cost 5
years or so ago (before I knew my wife) because of a similar fault but on
that occasion, the electrics died and the car wouldn't start. It is an Isuzu
motor and I understand that they are prone to problems with the electrics-
    I hope it's not a repeat.

Blow and double blow!!!!! It was a repeat - the car needed a new alternator
and now the missus is £270 worse off. The reason there was no battery light
is that the bulb has gone. Apparently my wife reckons it has never been on
since she's had the car. To replace it, according to the garage, the
steering wheel and complete dash has to come off, costing a couple of hours
labour . I'm not so sure so will have a look myself. If it is true then all
I have to say is "thanks very bl**dy much Vauxhall"!

I replaced a couple of bulbs in the Speedo of my 1998 Corsa so I could see
how fast I was going at night. However yours will be a different Speedo
set-up than what mine was, as I didn't have a rev counter (I only had the
merit), however I am sure it will be very similar.

If I remember correctly the Speedo unit comes out with about 10 screws (not
at all difficult) there isn't even a Speedo cable as mine was done
electronically. Three of the screws remove the black trim around the Speedo
and once you have removed this, more screws actually hold the Speedo into
posistion. This then gives you access to all the bulbs!

    Hi,
The same thing has just happened on my 94 TD Corsa 1.5
When Revving (or idle) the needle jumps about.

I had a brand new alternator 12 months ago? must be a faulty connection, i'm
taking it to a garage later- no battery warning light on mine and runs OK
    except this fault?
