This seems to be problem that is occuring more and more but I have yet
to see a definitive answer to it.

Staring up from cold this one give a brief clatter. After a few seconds
    it is fine.

Changing the oil filter (genuine Vauxhall) shuts the clatter down to
1 second for a few months then it goes back up to 5 seconds.

I suspect that what is happening is that the oil is draining away from
the head for some reason and that once pressure is build up things are fine.

What should stop the oil draining from the head while the engine is cold?

    Thanks for any help

Is the clatter from your timing chain area?
What year/ mileage is your car?

No it is definite not a timing chain rattle. It's on a 52 plate 36k

    Thanks

Perhaps noisy hydraulic tappets - try Forte Top End Treatment see

Assume you have at least a quality 10W/40 semi synthetic oil in the
sump? Go to the Castrol website & look at their oil selector to see the
    correct oil for your Corsa.

Just because it is a 52 plate with 36k does not mean it is not timing
chain clatter. Are you absolutely sure?

    What engine is it?

I always recommend buying genuine oil filters and this seems to have
    helped a little.

It does sound as if you have the wrong oil though. Your Vauxhall dealer
will have the right semi-synthetic oil at a reasonable price so I would
recommend buying that and chaging the oil straight away.

  6. Been nearly a week and the engine is almost silent. I fitted a genuine
Vauxhall filter and the vauxhall service guy supplied semi-synth' GM 10W-40.

I queried this as the handbook says 5W-30 but guy said Vauxhall
reccomend a slightly thicker oil at 30k+

I'm quietly confident that another oil change in 5k time will do it.

The engine is an Ecotec 973cc and the more I read the more it seems
that servicing on these CANNOT be skimped.

    Cheers
