Chipping an Astra Sri

Discussion in 'Astra' started by Charles Bingham, Oct 9, 2009.

  1. Hi, I have a 55 plate 2.0 ltr Astra Sri (170) and a friend told me that
the EMU chip can be changed to give more power output. I Googled but
didn't find anything very relevant so, can any experts out there help
    please?

You didn't search very far! CourtenaySport will sort your car out no
    problem.
It will give you an extra 10BHP for around £450 so not worth doing unless
    you
really must. Petrol engines are not good for remaps - turbo diesel engines
    are
much better. Avoid cheap crappy "tuning boxes" as they damage your engine.
I doubt you will find an EMU in your car unless it is to do with Rod Hull.
    It's
    an ECU.

  3. OK Roger, I stand corrected ) I listened carefully to what my friend
had to say and as he works for a Vauxhall main dealer I believed every
word he said. His terms, I'm afraid, as in "chipping" and "EMU"!

He suggested that as my engine is the same as the one fitted in the VXR
it could be "chipped" to the same performance which did sound a bit
suspect, even to me, a complete ignoramus on matters of the car.

I take your advice on board and will investigate as you suggest although
it does not seem worth doing for a few BHP extra.

    Thanks again.

    A few issues to consider:-

How much more (if anything) will your insurance company want for the
    modded car?

Can the powertrain hack the extra bhp and torque long term?

Are the brakes up to it? Are they already the same as the VXR ones?
