Cavalier SRI - fast or not?

    I have a '92 Cavalier SRI 2 litre.
    I used to own a Peugeot 309 GTI 1.9 and I was expects somewhere near the
    same sort of performance from the SRI. Thing is it's not even close - my A4
    TDI 115 would completely blow it away. Is this normal for these cars, or is
    it down on power for some reason?

    BTW the car is a real basket case - only bought it to run for a year or two
    before it dies. Just thought it might be a bit more fun to drive...
