Car Tax

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by Todger O'Toole, Sep 16, 2006.

  1. Hi All,
Just renewed the wifes car tax and got charged £190.00
    It's a Corsa 1.4i Automatic on an '02 plate
Spoke to Car Tax people in Swansea and they say its
because the CO2 emmissions are 190 for this car
(though I couldn't find it in their tables).
Brother has Astra 02 1.6i and his tax is only £150.00.
DVLA say they work on figures from Vauxhall and I should query with them.
Does this sound right? and does anyone have an email contact for Vauxhall
where I could find this info - can't get much sense on the net other than
    new sales.
    Cheers
    TO'T

Looks like only the currently on sale models are listed online at
    http://www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk/search/

Looking at that data though, it says the 2005 1.4i 16V Corsa 5dr Auto
is 180g/Km. This is the newer Twinport engine, an 02 model could well
be 190. You can email to get the correct information
for older vehicles. Automatic gearbox vehicles usually (and in this
case does) have higher CO2 emissions stated. If your bro's car is a
manual box, then that could explain it (but looking at the figures on
that website for the 2005 Astra G 1.6 16V, all gearbox varients have
lower emissions than the Corsa 1.4 engine anyway).

    Hope this helps,

    Tariq

    Hi Tariq
Think you've hit the nail on the head. It's the automatic bit that appears
    to
    increase the emmissions,
Yup, brother's car is a manual.
    Thanks for the speedy reply

It's good to see that the Government has simplified road tax so that we
    can all easily understand it!

Don't forget, if it all gets too confusing and we turn to our bikes, we
must soon have a bell on the handlebars so when someone steps in front
of us we can ring this before we attempt to grab the brake - oops too
late, sorry! I always thought that braking and shouting was the best
    option!

As a minor comment, when I bought my Corsa 1.2SXi new last year if I had =
specified the optional larger alloy wheels it would have moved the tax =
category up to the next band. Better waiting until after I had bought =
it then nothing known about it at all by the tax folk. As it is it =
still has the original wheels but road tax is only =A335 a year because =
    it runs on LPG.

Sorry if you know this already but to find out the Road Tax cost if you
know the Registration Number of the vehicle in question goto

    http://www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/
then select "vehicle enquiry" sign on the left
then click on next, then enter your reg number and make then click on
    next

and then you will see the
Vehicle Excise Duty Rate for vehicle
which the DVLA figures you should have to pay

I already knew how much it was (as I'd just paid it)
but initially I couldn't figure out, how my brother's bigger engined car
    would cost less.

Oops, typo, and I thought I had read it before posting too. Car tax on my
Corsa is £35 per year, just in case it does not read correctly second time
that is thirty-five British pounds per year.

Exactly the same as if it runs on petrol - HM C&E cannot guarantee you are
running on LPG all the time, so will charge you for running on petrol.
    There is no LPG rate.

Bob (sorry for top posting, just making the thread read better)
