Camping Fridge

Discussion in 'General Motoring' started by philip woolford, Jun 27, 2006.

  1. Could anyone please help me? I am going camping at the weekend and have a
small 12v fridge (the type that holds about 4 cans and was wondering how
long I could run this from the cigarette lighter socket in my Zafira before
    the battery goes flat?

    Thanks

all depends on the fridges power consumption (watts) and your battery's amps
    per hour

To work it out use this formula - volts (of battery which is 12) = watts (of
fridge) divided by amps. The figure you want is the amps figure - if you
divide this by the amps per hour of the battery you will get how long the
battery will last powering the fridge. But, remember if you run the fridge
for this time it will be as flat as Asda lemonade.

Wish I could imply say x number of hours, but lifes not ever simple.

It'll probably keep the beer cool enough whilst you are waiting for the A.A.
to come and jumpstart your motor.

I have one of these coolers and if I need to run it for any length of time I
use one of those cheap power pack/booster/jump start thing. but when driving
I plug both into the car electrics to run/recharge.

    Point to note!!!
Remember that the lighter socket in the rear of your zafira will only
supply power for several minutes once the ignition key is removed. Glad
I took a gas lamp when camping last week.

aha, and I guess omega's?, that'd explain why the tyre inflator gave out
1/2 way through the second rear tyre and I had to swap to the front
    lighter socket!

(another one of life's little mysteries solved)

You could buy a cigarette lighter doubler that shuts off when the voltage
    falls below 12v/

N ot sure if it is the same in Zafiras but in my Vectra the sockets all go
off with the ignition, very frustrating when phones need charging or indeed
    beer needs to stay cold!
